Youth Apprenticeship
Build A Pro works in partnership with our local school district and youth service organizations to give young people the ability to jump-start their careers. The district already has several dual and concurrent enrollment programs for 4-year college degree programs, and apprenticeship is one additional avenue to connect individuals with meaningful work. Employers are beginning to recognize the power of investing in their employees and the younger generations. Instead of a ‘what have you done for me lately’ relationship, employers offering apprenticeships can see potential in an individual and invest in that individual’s growth. In turn, apprentices who feel valued are more likely to find job satisfaction and a long-term career relationship with the employer who sponsored your apprenticeship program. Many occupations will allow full apprentice status to youths as young as 16.
“Youth apprentices are hired by an employer and receive a paycheck from their first day of work. Their wages increase as they progress in the worksite and demonstrate growing knowledge, skills, and technical competencies. Typically, an apprenticeship lasts multiple years (averaging three years), beginning usually during students’ junior or senior year in high school. Unlike other career preparation experiences (e.g., shadowing, internships), youth apprentices complete their initial training with industry-recognized credentials. In some cases, they may also complete the program with earned college credits that may lead to an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.” (AASA Staff (2021) Youth Apprenticeships Give Students Brighter Futures, AASA - Expanded Pathways)

Special Consideration for Employers
Build A Pro will do our best to ensure we present responsible, mature, work-ready youth as candidates for apprenticeship. Whether an employer is seeking an additional workforce or a solution to the loss of institutional knowledge following senior employee retirement, companies are learning about the benefits of youth apprenticeships. Youth apprentices may need special accommodations to complete their high school education or face challenges related to transportation. Additional insurance may be required for some higher-risk occupations when including youth apprentices. Despite some of these additional logistics, the employer can expect a loyal, hard-working apprentice. Employers interested in investing in our Youth Apprentices should contact us for further information.
